Peer–to–peer Traffic Measurements

چکیده
The global Internet has emerged to become an integral part of everyday life. Internet is now as fundamental a part of the infrastructure as is the telephone system or the road network. Peer-toPeer (P2P) is the logical antithesis of the Client-Server (CS) paradigm that has been the ostensible predominant paradigm for IP-based networks since their inception. Current research indicates that P2P applications are responsible for a substantial part of the Internet traffic. New P2P services are developed and released at a high pace. The number of users embracing new P2P technology is also increasing fast. It is therefore important to understand the impact of the new P2P services on the existing Internet infrastructure and on legacy applications. This report describes a measurement infrastructure geared towards P2P network traffic collection and analysis, and presents measurement results for two P2P applications: Gnutella and BitTorrent.

Monitoring and Classification of Teletraffic in P2P Environment
Today, a large part of the teletraffic carried by the Internet is generated by file-sharing applications based on the peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm. This paper considers teletraffic measurements and classification, with an emphasis on techniques which can be used to detect P2P traffic with “conventional” PC hardware, and shows some initial results of such measurements, done at the Telecommunicati...
متن کاملTraffic Measurements of P2P Systems
The paper reports on a measurement infrastructure developed at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (BIT) with the purpose to do traffic measurements and analysis on Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic. The measurement methodology is based on using application logging as well as link-layer packet capture. This offers the possibility to measure application layer information with link-layer accuracy. Deta...
متن کاملExperimental analysis of the impact of peer-to-peer applications on traffic in commercial IP networks
To evaluate the impact of peer-to-peer applications on traffic in wide area networks, we analyze measurements from a high speed IP backbone link carrying TCP traffic towards several ADSL areas. The first observations are that the prevalent part of traffic is due to peer-to-peer applications (almost 80% of total traffic) and that the usage of network becomes symmetric in the sense that customers...
متن کاملSignaling and networking in unstructured peer-to-peer networks
This work deals with the efficiency of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks, which are distributed and self-organizing overlay networks. We contribute to their understanding and design by using new measurement techniques, simulations and analytical methods. In this context we first present measurement methods and results of P2P networks concerning traffic and topology characteristics as well as concerni...
متن کاملKooperative Peer-to-Peer-basierte Verkehrsinformationssysteme
This thesis deals with cooperative traffic information systems, which support the driver of a car in selecting a route, based on traffic information collected by other cars. System participants contribute measurements of the traffic situation in their vicinity (e. g., current traffic flow speed) and use the measurements made by other drivers to find the fastest route to their destination with r...
متن کاملExploiting Routing Redundancy via Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlays
Structured peer-to-peer overlays provide a natural infrastructure for resilient routing via efficient fault detection and precomputation of backup paths. These overlays can respond to faults in a few hundred milliseconds by rapidly shifting between alternate routes. In this paper, we present two adaptive mechanisms for structured overlays and illustrate their operation in the context of Tapestr...
